An editorial planning conference of psychiatric clinicians and primary care providers was held on September 20, 2006, in Tarrytown, NY. The goal of the program was to provide practical information on collaborative patient care for psychiatric clinicians and family practitioners. The group agreed that:
- Mental health specialists need the support of primary care providers in monitoring and treating metabolic disorders, whether occurring as a comorbid condition or resulting as a side effect from antipsychotic drug treatment2,3
- Primary care providers need practical office-based tools and protocols for better diagnosis and treatment of their patients with bipolar disorder
